Growing seeds in seed compost part 2
A few days in and some very mixed weather with the results so far of the seed compost trial.
26th August 2024
The Levington’s compost dries out the quickest. I thought it might as there are so few lumps in it. Once a day watering at the moment seems adequate. Germination rates are erratic to say the least. The cauli is best in the mixed composts and the chicory is best in the Jack’s Magic compost. All the seed trays were watered today.

Levington’s magic mixture – 7/10 chicory, 6/10 fennel and 7/10 cauliflower. The spring onions were a complete failure in all composts. 20 seeds germinated altogether
Mixed compost – 8/10 cauliflower, 8/10 fennel and 5/10 chicory. 21 seeds germinated
Jack’s Magic 9/10 cauliflower, 8/10 fennel and 6/10 chicory. 23 seeds germinated.
So what we can say is that more seeds germinated in the Jack’s Magic compost but the cauliflowers are biggest in the Levington’s then the mixed and then Jack’s Magic. So far, it depends what you want in a seed compost. Best germination or biggest seedlings? (Sorry for the sideways image below. It just will not rotate.)

I pricked out the seedlings where there were two in a module and put them in an empty cell but only within the same tray so that there were no compost transfers.
